I also put a plug in the end of the line to the tank when disconnected from the filter to stop diesel draining back to the tank. Maybe this isnt required but its just what I do.

Hello everyone, I have changed the fuel filter and filled it with diesel. Fl2 started without problems but after a few days fl2 no start, I have seen air bubbles in the two pipes that go towards the pressure pump, I push with a manual pump but the bubbles do not move, any ideas?

Sorry to hear that, I renewed mine last week.

As it ran for a few days I am surprised you now have issue, are you sure the all the pipes went back square and tight ? Is the new filter water drain plug tight ? I assume your tank has fuel in ?

My first course of action would be, charge up the battery take off the supply pipe and with clean fuel in a fuel can pump fuel into the supply side of the filter until fuel comes out of the return side. ( you may need to slacken off the return side connector). Once running with no air leaks a small amount of air in a pipe should purge through.

The issue I do not know is can the electronics protect the vehicle if no fuel at the injectors is registered. It will need someone h experience of the electronics to say if that can happen and now needs a reset. FL2 MY10 TD4 GS traded in at 2 years

Already works, I will tell the solution to serve other people, the problem has been in filling the fuel filter, I just put 3/4 of diesel inside the filter, (fault) must be filled to the top, air Inside the circuit, the solution is to open the injectors number 2 of the photo and pipe 8.

Necessary a battery starter, to help the car battery, after 15-20 starts all the air out by the pipes close and clean. If after a few days there is air in the circuit the problem will be will be with the reliability of the filter connections, I hope not

In summary, it has been a mistake not to fill the filter to the limit and the solution is not the most recommended but it is solved ..... I think Thumbs Up

Personally I fill the filter before fitting, easiest way. When I get called to help somebody who's tried to change the filter without filling the filter or bleeding the system properly, I use a fluid extraction pump. I disconnect the return line to the fuel tank, plug the pipe from the vacuum fluid extraction pump to the filter and suck diesel all the way through the system until I get no more air coming out with the diesel. Reconnect the return line and crank until it starts. Never fails to work.

What would be really helpful is if someone could let us know what diameter pipe you would need to fit over the end of the Fuel outlet spigot on the filter. I'm getting mixed searches of 8.5mm and 6mm and don't want to end up too big or too small!

8mm is a good Tight fit but pushes on easy enough.

Did mine today took about 20 mins didn’t fill filter just used this off eBay eBay Item No. 173420808368 and connected to outlet of filter (arrow towards tank) and pumped approx 20 times until fuel came out of pipe. Started vehicle it ran smooth first push of starter. I’ve read of a couple of different ways of doing this but this one worked for me.

I used the same bulb pump and it worked brilliantly - no need to fill filter - just pumped until no bubbles heard from fuel tank and the bulb felt hard.
The FL2 manual says connect the pump in series with the tank-to-filter inlet. I cut off the outlet tube from the old filter and pushed into the end of the 8mm rubber tubing - it then fits perfectly into the inlet orifice.

I just fill the filter with fuel using a length of pipe and a small funnel, fit it on and start up. Job done.

The RAC removed my filter for fault diagnosis, on refit he just got me to switch on the ignition but not start the engine. He explained this would prime the fuel pump.

RAC man was lucky - the fuel filter must still have been fairly full.

There is a fuel pump in the tank - the tank is a saddle design, so the pump transfers the fuel from one side to the other, it cannot and does not push fuel out of the tank towards the engine.

The fuel pump on the engine is mechanical, if the engine isn't turning over it cannot pump fuel. It is also crap at sucking the fuel unless the fuel lines and filter are already filled ie there is no air in the filter/ lines.

Hence you can switch on the ignition for as long as you like, unless the engine is running the fuel system will no prime itself. Tangiers Orange - gone, missing her
