Argghh! Stubborn starter!

Hi,

over the past year my Freelander 2 has been a bit of a pain to start.

In the Summer its fine. In the winter its stubborn.

The symptoms are you put the key in, turn on the ignition and then depress the clutch to start. Sometimes before the clutch has been depressed the issues begin. The hazard lights flash (you can't turn them off for a few seconds after shutting it down), the temp gauge goes to the hottest setting and the red light comes on, the wipers wipe once, the dash says HDC fault system not available, Engine system Fault, Terrain response system not available. It will do this once, 15 times or it will just start first time. Very random!!

So far I have changes the Throttle body - I don't think that this was linked, the Battery, added an earth strap.

I also removed the existing earth strap and cleaned it all up and put vaseline around the contacts to keep it dry, which made a massive improvement for about 2 weeks and then it came back with vengeance.

If anyone has had similar issues I would love to hear if you managed to overcome it.

A very friendly member also let me use his code reader which came up with the following codes:

P1259 Immobiliser to powertrain control module signal error.

P0536 Air Conditioning evaporated temperature sensor - circuit range/performance

P169F Control Module - Unused fault code

B10A2 Crash input

P063A - Generator voltage sense circuit

P0045 Turbo/supercharge boost control solenoid circuit/open

P2564 - Turbocharger boost control position sensor A - circuit low

P00AF - Turbo/supercharge boost control A - Performance

P0570 - Speed control acceleration signal.

Have you tried adding a second earth lead?

I had all sorts of weird happenings on the dash until I did this - all electrics gone, no lights, no temp or fuel gauge, just a beep and everything dead but car still drove OK but there was never a problem at start up. Tattoos - Why would you choose to look like the wall of a public toilet?

Yep put an extra earth strap on it.

Still struggling. It's being a real pain recently. Due to the frosty mornings.

I've had the battery replaced in the key fob and the buttons repaired.

Next stop is starter motor solinoid and brake switch. If these don't work. I'm off to the main dealers to spend lots of money.

Given the range of symptoms and fault codes this feels more like a problem with the controller modules or network rather than components such as the starter or brake switch. Things to check:

To make doubly sure it's not an earth problem you could perhaps just whilst starting add a temporary extra earth by running a jumper cable from the battery to a suitable point on the body or engine. Remove before driving, obviously.

The body control module (aka central junction box) acts as the network controller. It is in the passenger footwell behind the glovebox, and the connectors to it have been known to become dislodged by passengers' feet. So check all the connections to the CJB.

Given your symptoms I believe PAB is on the right track with your problem. The main dash, chassis and engine compartment harnesses all converge in the passenger footwell, pictured. Just pull back the carpet near the bonnet release handle and you will see this intersection of harnesses with the CJB. Unclip the white plastic shield to expose the three plugs. I would recommend releasing all of these plugs, inspecting, possibly using a electrical continuity spray cleaner and reseating. You"ll also need to do this with the CJB plugs, the ones you can get to as there are ones behind, between the CJB and bulkhead which are not accessible.
Given the range of symptom codes this seems logical.

Ok thanks. I'll have a look at this tonight.

Just wondering, the previous owner has installed an aftermarket Harmon sat nave as the original had a white screen. He said that he didn't remove the original and it's behind the glove box. Maybe he disturbed this white box?

Is there a guide to install aftermarket satnav that I could check to see if it's been installed correctly or is this unlikely that this would cause my issues?

I had a look at the connections in the photo, but couldn't see any troubles.

However on a complete whim, I lift up the gear stick surround and disconnected the special program selector.

So far the car has started first time in -5c. Early days but had anyone else disconnect this before?

This morning, back to the non starting!! Only took three attempts but I have reconnected the special programs dial.

So I've been trying to eliminate the obvious. I've checked all of the electrical connections that I can see in the passenger footwell and behind the glove box. I've also checked all fuses in the 3 fuse boxes. No issues found.

I think it must be the crash code that it is showing. I've heard that this will cut the fuel pump to reduce the risk of an explosion if the car had a crash.

Has anyone ever had and resolved the crash code? Is it stored in the airbag control module or just on the ecu. I have cleared it with a carsoft code reader and a hawk eye code reader but I think it needs to be a Land Rover specific! So it that at the stealers only??
