Plastic in fuel filler pipe!!

Hi guys,

So it seems that when I bought the car there was a problem with the fuel cap valve. Went to fill it up for the first time and it was screwed on really tight and let out a big rush of air. Thought it would just be a case of cleaning said cap but I went on holiday and forgot.

Came back and went to fill up again before a long trip. When I went to open the cap the horrifying rattle of plastic on metal and thud of filler cap pieces hitting the concrete made my balls retract into my chest. Bit of research says that the fuel filter will catch it but it seems to have lodged itself in the end of the filler where the safety nozzle is.

Any ideas how I can get it out? Im not sure how easily accessible that end of the fuel line is...

Multsmesc Alex for the link. Only problem is that I cant get see past the little yellow flap with the 'i' on it to get at the bit.

I was wondering if there was a way to get the thread that the cap screws into off?

For anyone who's also curious. I found this which I will have to have a go at on the weekend when I have time and less than 1/2 a tank!

Thanks Westville, Yorky Bob PM'd me a useful guide on how I might be able to sort it. I will update with my success/failure soon.

I also just had an idea on how I might get it out with a short length of hose, some gaffa tape and a vac...

I started to write the other day about using a vac and thought better of it, not sure if fumes would be an issue, probably not with diesel but erred on the safe side.

Thanks for all the replies guys. It looks as though I will be hitting the last quarter of the fuel tank tonight so I will be trying everything out.

Will update with my success/failure later Bow down
