Holmsley - Camping in the Forest

We have just come back from a long weekend at the Holmsley Camping in the Forest site in the New Forest. It is situated on a WW2 airbase with the hard standing on the old dispersal points. If you like your camping/caravanning a bit 'wild' this is the site for you as you arrive, book in and then go and find somewhere where you want to pitch. We were lucky as for some reason they said it was going to be busy so we were shown a couple of areas to pitch. we had booked hard standing but chose a grass pitch slightly out of the main areas. The toilet blocks were clean and tidy and the showers were typical push button style. I would imagine that during the summer months the site would be very busy and due to the 'pitch anywhere' policy very chaotic. Apart from all that we had a good weekend and as it is in the south of the New Forest is was handy for the beach as well as walks in the forest.

There used to be a 12th century pub on the western end of the airfield, come off the airfield onto the road head west take the then first turning right, you go up a narrow lane which broadens out into part of the taxi way then narrows back to a lane bending left and it was on the left, can't find it on Google maps though, maybe burnt down, if so a pity, nice pub. my PC is slightly to the right of Genghis

I think that you may thinking of the wrong airfield ! The Royal Oak at Fritham is possibly the pub you are thinking of, it is just off the old Stoney Cross Airfield further north in the forest. There aren't any pubs that close to Homesley, just the ones in Bransgore ,Burley and Bashley. I used to live nearby and galloped all around Homesley on the round-ups and colt hunts ! When we stayed there a 10 years ago in mid summer it was heaving, to the point that had the Fire Brigade turned up they would have closed it, we had someone try to pitch that close to us the guy ropes overlapped, wasn't a one off the whole place was like it. Was a shame because if it had been run properly it would have been a great site, as you said toilet block was good, cycle tracks on the doorstep.
Swore that I would never go back and haven't, use CL's instead. Common sense isn't very common.
