Tapping in to speaker cables?

Hi all,

When I got my replacement Freely a few months ago (MY15 SE) I was disappointed to find that it had no subwoofer. The basic stereo system is terrible in general (compared to my old MY12 GS) but I'm hoping the sound can be improved by adding a sub.

To do so I need to tap into the rear speaker cables. I plan to do so behind the trim panel at the base of the B-billar if possible. (has anyone here done this?)

I'm not sure of the best way to actually make the connection however. Strip away some insulation, solder on my extra wire then tape it up perhaps? Anybody got any other/better suggestions?

Thanks. Thumbs Up

I replaced the standard speakers with those from the higher spec alpine system. Made a huge difference

Yes Taz, it'll be to feed the speaker-level inputs of a small amp to drive the sub.

I might well do that as well, but I do miss the sub I had in my old car!

Well 'small' for a sub amp, relatively speaking. I don't want a bloody great box in my boot so I plan to use an OEM sub which fits neatly around the spare wheel. I believe they're not massively powerful speakers (for a sub) so won't need a huge amp.

Speaking of which, does anyone know what the power rating of the OEM sub speaker is before I buy one?

You may want to search a few threads before buying parts. It is not as simple as the old days.

I had this system in a previous car with two amps.
