We did this in August, one of the best forest drives I have been on. Fantastic scenery and as we got there early very little traffic.

Have a look at the North Coast 500 website - http://www.northcoast500.com/home.aspx

500 miles round the North of Scotland starting/finishing Inverness. Plenty of info on the website for places to stay/visit.

We regularly visit Ullapool area for relaxing/cycling/walking. Try visiting Coaigach/Assynt area for some pretty spectacular scenery (Stac Pollaidh/Suilven/Canisp etc.) and good walking if you are up for it. Boat trips from Ullapool out past Summer Isles for dolphin/porpoise/basking shark and bird-watching.

Ardmair campsite is where we normally stay, facilities a bit outdated but the location is fantastic, and the cooked breakfast is fine! Broomfield campsite in Ullapool is popular for access to town, but rubbish facilities.

Achiltibuie campsite (Port a Bhaigh) in Coigach area is quite good as well, single track road to get there though. Achmelvich also good, beautiful beach, but hellish road. Further south we have stayed at Inverewe (Poolewe), worth a visit for the gardens.

Ardmair sunsets are pretty nice -

Hi
We had to postpone until next year to have a loft conversion on the house, which was pain as I had been really looking forward to going, but it was either that or lose our slot for the builder man Sad .
I am now much more familiar with the car and absolutely confident she will do what we need including some rough stuff, although I wont be towing I might have a roof box and cycle rack - yet to finalise the kit list.
Looking forward to getting up there and seeing the places that were suggested by people on here and by friends, I don't want to rush around so the trip will have to wait unfortunately. No Longer the owner of a 2013MY Fuji White GS

Make sure you book any accommodation well in advance, the West Coast of Scotland is absolutely hoaching with tourists this season and it's difficult to get any rooms at short notice.

I'd second the Bealach na ba the view at the top is amazing and the switchbacks I don't think you'll see anywhere else in the UK. Applecross again is a beautifully area. 2017 Discovery Sport Pure Fuji White "Lynne"

I've just done the NC500, not a spare room in Inverness at the Finnish never mind the rest of the route, we had to stay over in avimore . We went from east to west , that way you can see the apple cross pass in all its glory , at the top of the hill it says you are 2053 ft and the gradient is 1 in 5 . Do it now ! Your a long time dead !!

The NC500 is a fabulous drive. Did it over 30 years ago with a Datsun 180 and an Avondale caravan. REMEMBER that most of it is single track road and now the Aston/martin- jaguar-Merc brigade drive it at warp speed. There are so many different places and views to see that, as said before, take your time and enjoy the run.
When you do get up here, dont worry about the weather, It usually changes on the hour, every hour.

We did the Highlands in 2014 went in early June and drove 2216 miles, no midges and had several days of sunshine Very Happy ,
the first five days we spent in Invergarry and the next eight we based ourselves in Lairg,
by doing this we could drive a different a road each day and return in the evening, some memories we brought back, the drive up and over Applecross, that was until we got over the top and saw three coaches parked up! and driving back one afternoon from Tongue to Lairg "38 miles" and only seeing four other cars on the road, the clean air, and the wildlife.
Would certainly go again.

Fancy going up the North West for a few days but not sure about the midgets during the summer months. Any one experienced in these areas please advice about the midgets.

Never saw any midgets at all up the west coast last May. We did encounter a few midges on walks on the hillsides however. Razz
