Droning noise from rear wheel

I have a droning noise coming from the o/s/r of my 2009/59 FL2 GS. It gets worse once i have driven about 5 miles and over about 60mph and has been there since i got it 16 months ago but is now starting to get louder.
Could it be that I just have a noisy wheel bearing which may soon be about to let go or do any of you guys have any other suggestions that I'm not aware of?

Could be handbrake shoes rubbing once they get hot? Have you felt the wheel after a drive to see if it's hot in cpmparison to the other wheels?
My old FL2 had a rear wheel bearing go and it did sound like that and was speed dependent too, got louder with speed.

Wheels and hubs are all cool, and the tyres are fine with approx 5mm of tread all round. Wondering whether it may be rear diff bearing?
if so whats the cost to get that done?

ON A CLEAR ROAD if you swerve the car from side to side, the noise should change with each change of direction if it's a wheel bearing. If it's the o/s/r it should go a lot quieter when you swerve towards the right as you are taking the load off of it and come back when you swerve towards the left as you are loading it up. I had a wheel bearing replaced only 2 months ago and those were the symptoms then but it's not like that now, more constant and doesn't seem to change at all

If you had work done only 2 months ago to cure this I would go back and ask why you have the same problem. It would not be the first time in life a new bearing failed or was fitted incorrectly. FL2 MY10 TD4 GS traded in at 2 years

OP says the noise is coming from O/S/R so my money's still on a wheel bearing. Past: FL2 TD4 HSE Auto

Yorky Bob - You will see from my previous comment that the symptoms are not the same as when I had the wheel bearing done. The wheel bearing tha went was o/s/f so no connection

Paxman - I am thinking along these lines, how can i tell, are there any obvious things to look for to establish whether this is the problem?

try swapping the rear tyres over (left/rear to right/rear), if the sound moves it's clearly the tyre. Are you on wranglers, mine went very noisy around 5-4mm, changing for scorpion verdes solved the problem.  MY2014 SD4 XS

Hi all,

I'm seemingly having the same issue... Quite loud humming noise (sounding like "ummmmmmmmm") coming from the rear of the vehicle. It begins around 60km/h, is at its loudest around 100km/h and then seems to quiet down (perhaps it's just the wind and road noise getting louder in comparison).

I've checked the tires visually and they appear fine, no visible cupping or anything like that. So, as above, I'm suspecting it is a bearing of some sort - wheel or diff.

My question to the more mechanically savvy on this forum: Assuming it is a bearing... I'm about to go on a 1,500km round-trip next week. Any chance of things getting worse and either more things getting damaged from this or me getting stranded? I can live with the noise, but I know there would be no way to get this fixed before I head out...

Thanks in advance!
