OBDll code reader

Have today fixed a low power problem by replacing a split intercooler hose - with thanks to this forum for diagnosis and remedy.
Unfortunately now unable to cancel engine warning light, my cheap U480 CAN OBD2 code reader seems to load (incl ISO 9141-2) but then stalls with msg LINKING ERROR. Have used this tool on several cars including OH 2006 Focus 1.8 petrol, both scanning and erasing.
Can anyone help with this, either method of use or suggestion of another cheapish scanner to read and erase engine faults on FL2.

might be a silly question, but have you got the key fob in and pressed the start button without foot on clutch, so ignition is on?also I have found with some vehicles that the ecu needs to go through a normal drive cycle to realise the fault has gone, then it may clear, hope this helps.

I was not aware that start button needs to be depressed in addition to key fob engaged for ignition on.

Engine light now cleared, many thanks Sid

Thought so ,what about a code reader then for a 13 reg to reset the service light ,is there anything available that doesn't more than two hundred pounds or less that would do the job

Thanks for the link , that's what I'm after " I'm also looking at the terrafirma code reader for the freelander at £109 ponds which would be more useful if it can reset the service light ,anyone used one ?
