Always fighting to keep it in a straight line,it was very unstable on the motorway anything and everything would cause it to wobble about, It got to a point where I wouldn't tow on the motorway.we changed everything on it with no joy, different caravans, tyres, wheels, loading the van differently nothing worked then on one trip we had a very bad experience when I nearly lost it so it had to go.If you Google D2 poor towing you will be surprised by some of the stories on there.

Perhaps due to the suspension lift on yours?, mines standard height.

I've towed 2 elddis twin axles with RRS MY10 3.0 TDV6 and MY13 3.0 SDV6 and they were neither as stable as my 97 Landcruiser towing a Fleetwood twin axle Sad

My brother had the 2.7 rrs and I thought it was underpowered. I've never driven a 3.6 but the forum is full of posts regarding blown engines and problems sourcing replacements due to low quantities so I would avoid them. If you can afford the SDV6 that's the one to get Gav imho Thumbs Up

I swapped the D2 for an x-type jag and after trip to south of France and only 6 months old traded it in for a FL2 before it crippled me - it was awful. The FL2 was superb and I bought another afterwards. I only moved to rrs to tow the twin axles but after selling the van I'm going for a ds now Cool

That black one looks gorgeous, a metropolis?
Sadly cant afford an SDV6, it would have to be one of the older 2.7s

not the suspension lift as it was the same with standard height suspension. I did those mods after I stopped towing on the motorways.

Scotland 2011 Freelander 2 SD4 Sport Auto Fuji White

Here is a pic of our caravan and Land Rover. Was our first trip away with the van since we got the Land Rover and I was delighted with how the van and car sat when towing, was perfectly level and it towed it effortlessly. Was also delighted with the MPG, I was getting an average of 28ish. Just hoping that the boss will let me get a new van next year my back longs for a van with a fixed bed! Confused

 Regards

Alan

If my wife ever sells my stuff for what I told her I paid for it, there will be some bargains out there!

On the subject of D2 towing stability, I was surprised by this when we first got our D2. Two things fixed it properly.

The first was having the steering rods replaced. There was some play in the rod ends, not enough for an MOT fail but enough to make a difference towing.

The second was realising that the tow ball was a long way behind the back axle, making a big lever. Oddly reducing the nose weight of the van back to 7% made a big difference.

Once these were fixed all was fabulous.

Pic above is from a very happy Easter hol in Scotland a few years ago. Looking forward to taking the van up there with the Freelander.
