Help please, freelander 2 fuel gauge.

I was driving home from York tonight down the A1, we got stuck in a 10 mile jam but all was good as I had 3/4 of a tank of diesel. Once the jam cleared we got going again and all off a sudden the fuel gauge went to zero and so did the range, it then climbed back up to the 3/4 again so I assumed it was a faulty gauge as I was sure I had fuel. After approx 15 miles it happened again and then the car lost all acceleration like it was in limp mode and started kangarooing so I. Pulled off the A1 and turned the car off and on again to see if it cleared the problem which It didn't. Luckily there was a fuel station in view so I put another £25 in and the gauge went up to 3/4 again with a range of 320 miles, car was absolutely fine and got us home. Where do I start looking to sort the problem??

Had that with new 2011 SD, dealers partly removed/lowered tank and fitted new sensors. car drove fine for a few days prior to repair sometimes showing correct level and other times showing zero.
Warning!!: With sensor working correctly you can NOT physically run out of fuel, if you ignore all low fuel warnings the engine will eventually be electronically stopped, this eliminates system running dry with possible damage.
With faulty sensors you could actually run out. All FL2's (3) Gone

This is aa known LR fault. I had the same on my late 2010 FL2 and it required a rewire done under extended warranty. Has been fine since. Learned to drive in 2011.

As I've had the car for less than 30 days the trader I bought it from is going to foot the bill, I did buy a haynes manual today and to be fair it doesn't look that hard to change the fuel sender units, just a bit time consuming removing the exhaust and dropping the prop shaft then removing the tank. Just waiting until Monday to get the trader a price. If I ensure the car has diesel in it by using the trip computer as a guide will it be ok to use until it can go into the garage to be fixed??

There is at least one thread on here discussing this in more detail, but I believe it isn't a case of replacing some parts, it was changing the wiring setup. It is on here somewhere. Learned to drive in 2011.

It's the time consuming bit that results in a £800+ bill, painful if you are having to pay!

I believe that they now hard-wire the system instead of going through the palaver of replacing the sender units thus making the repair cheaper, but I'm not 100% sure of that. Good that it happened while under warranty!

Is the re wire easy enough to do myself or is it a dealer only fix?? I keep reading about landrover bulletins but where do I find them to read them?? I can't find them.

Can't help there, sadly I am mechanically incompetent but there will be someone along who can for sure. Good luck.

Mine had the same problem. I had a software update, this didn't work then had the senders re-wired. There's a technical bulletin about the afecting cars from 2007-2012 I think it was. All in all it cost me 400 quid for an update, 20 quids worth of wire and connectors and 5 hours labour at an indy. The connectors to the senders/pump corrode when in contact with diesel, that causes the fuel gauge problem. Black MY2013 SD4 GS Auto, Wood Company Armrest, Freel2 sticker.

All done, new senders fitted in the fuel tank, £666.37 at Marshall Landrover in Melton Mowbray. Luckily the trader I bought the car from picked up the tab. It's a relief for this to be sorted.

Glad it is sorted. Scary how much these things cost isn't it? Learned to drive in 2011.

The scary thing is the service guy quoted only 2 hours labour and it took 5, they honoured the quote though instead of adding another £300. Think he's going to get a bit of a telling off on Monday when he's back at work.
