Rear View Camera Washer

Over the winter I have noticed that the rear view camera quickly gets covered in road salt and dirt in general, it has happened again over the last few days, with temperatures dropping and the grit lorries coming back out. After a short drive, when you come to reverse the screen view is almost unviewable and renders the camera useless.

So I set about creating a wash system for the camera, its surprisingly easy to do and makes a huge difference, requiring just a few simple parts.

Parts List

1 metre length of tubing, available from Aquarium suppliers, 4mm or thereabouts.
1 1/4 Tee piece, eBay have them and easy to source, aquarium suppliers
Washer Spray Nozzle, I sourced a chrome one from early Mini's, Wood & Picket in London stock them, I got mine on aBay

Tee Piece

Nozzle fitted and connected, my dealer had stuck a self tapper through the tailgate to mount the number plate, why I am not sure as there is nothing to stop corrosion, silly idea but they always do this, so I used this hole, which actually sits directly below the camera and came in useful, you could use the existing plastic mounts that LR provide as these will also work quite well, although the thread on the washer may not be long enough.

Simply route the tubing up through the tailgate and cut the rear window washer tubing fit the tee piece and connect into that.
For peace of mind I would put a tie wrap on the connectors, at work we have some special ferrules, these are good up to 80psi, so little chance of the connections popping off and filling the tailgate with water.

I also have a small 12v water solenoid that was to be fitted, this would sit in the water line and only be activated when the reverse lights are on, this would save water as it wouldn't squirt through the camera jet when not needed, however, the electrics didn't like the solenoid so that idea was abandoned, in practice it uses very little water anyway.

Video of the washer in action from the outside, its quite discrete.

Video of the screen display with the washer in action, as you can see it works well.

Well done taz . I watched a couple of YouTube vids of the ford 4x4 in the USA which have this on both front and back cameras. Another way to clean the rear camera is to give the wife a cloth and tell her to get out and clean it Whistle Do it now ! Your a long time dead !!

As per Nuts' comment, I would patent that and send that video to McGovern's team over at G-DEC, and ask for ongoing Royalties for the design! Thumbs Up Foraging near Gaydon....

good idea in theory

but this cleans the lens in bad weather and things like road salt, which happen in freezing temperatures, unless you have a heated nozzle that not going to work for long as it will freeze Rolling Eyes

is the lens IP rated for a direct jet of water hitting it and if it does short out what's it going to take with it when it goes up in smoke

i think the idea is there but in theory this needs work on development Former Mod/Member, with the most post & Chicken George Arch nemesis

I can only reiterate what the guys have already said, top marks for ingenuity and pulling this off! I can honestly see LR rolling it out (possibly as an expensive option of course!) on their cars in the future. Hat's off to you! Very Happy Paula
