I'm getting a couple of new tyres fitted this afternoon and wondered where best to put them.

The Freelander 1 manual had dire warnings about the VCU self destructing unless you either replaced all four or put the new tyres on the back but I can't find an equivalent warning in the Freelander 2 manual.

With the majority of the drive going through the front I'd automatically put the best tyres there but is that right?

The fl2 doesn't have the fl1 issues with mismatched front and rear tyre wear.

I did have 4 part worn tyres, then got an unrepairable puncture in one so I replaced a pair. I put the new ones on the back, my thinking being that the fronts would wear quicker meaning I would be on 4 new tyres sooner rather than later, and with the new rears wearing least there would be less of a mis-match in wear when the new fronts went on.

However going into winter you might be best putting the new ones on the front, (if that is the best thing to do ? re-asking your question). I'll be putting winters on so that's not an issue for me.

When we bought our used FL2 from a dealer we made them do a service first as part of the deal and as part of it they replaced just the front left tyre as it was below 5mm. So either its not a problem or the dealers are unaware of any issues.

10k miles later no problem for me though.

Advice with 2WD cars is to put tyres with more tread on the back rather than the front. This is because when grip is reduced, eg in the wet, the car is more likely to understeer which is easier to control than oversteer, which is likely to occur if worn tyres are on the rear with better tyres on the front.

Whether this applies to 4WD cars or not, I don't know, but I guess it does. There are no issues that I have read about tyres and tread depth on the Freelander 2 like there was with the Freelander 1. 2016 BMW X3 30d SE in red

It turns out the question is academic anyway. I appear to be diffy one locking wheel nut key.

And after being told by the parts department that if I didn't have the key code I'd have to get a garage to chisel off the nuts and buy a new set ...


... the service department said if I could get it there in the next 20 minutes they could remove them with the master key before they went home for the evening; free of charge and I got a cup of coffee and a biscuit
