United Kingdom 2007 Freelander 2 TD4 HSE Manual Tambora Flame
Warranty on 2007 FL

Has anyone had experience with warranties such as this? The warranty people are telling me that they will not pay for the wheel bearing to be fixed as it has worn (they don't cover ware and tear), however their policy states they cover wheel bearings? Shocked they are claiming mine had just worn as it was making a noise, I call that a failure? I know it is not expensive to fix but if you have a warranty you expect itemised parts to be covered. Anyone had any experience?
I should point out that the car came with a two year warranty, which is why I chose that particular vehicle, I am now concerned that they could wriggle out of a more serious claim. Thanks in anticipation.

What's the mileage?

Ours is a 2008 with 125k miles, some of them very hard miles (I like mud and wading, and bouncing up kerbs) and the wheel bearings seem fine, so why would yours have failed unless they were faulty, or have you done 200k miles? Tangiers Orange - gone, missing her

If it's a Land Rover warranty it should cover it. If it's someone else's they may try to wriggle out. I would base my argument on the number of miles done since you bought it - if you've done say 10k miles, then wear and tear shouldn't be a problem and they ought to fix it imho. Ex AA Series III LWB Safari - Gone
300TDi Disco (bought new - terrible car) sent back after 18 months
Freelander 1 Estate - leased, given back at end of lease
200TDi Disco (bought from a mate with 100,000 on the clock) - Gone
Disco 2 TD5 - sold and exported to France
FR2 TD4 GS - Gone
FR2 SD4 HSE - Now changed for a DS
New model ex-demo Evoque S 180 in white
Unable to order a new DS, so gave up. Now have a Volvo S90 Recharge.

I had the same problem with my wheel bearing and RAC warranty, I had only done 4000 miles so my point was it was not me that broke it but they said it was down to wear and tear, on the other hand if the wheel bearing had cracked it would be covered.
The thing is LR will not just change the bearing they want to change the whole hub assembly at over £500, I ended up getting a Britpart bearing of the bay for £20 and a mate fitted it for £80. I6 WITH GAS CONVERSION

Thanks JLC, that was my point to them, when do they class a fail a fail? To me if a wheel bearing makes a lot of noise it has failed? Their point of view it is just worn. Frustrating as if it had broken apart then the damage could be a lot worse.

Thanks, glad it worked out for you. I am still fighting the wheel bearing cost with them, it just concerns me that if try to claim for a more expensive item such as the rear diff, they will say it is ware and tear. Anyway, I like a good fight so will keep at 'em!

With items like a rear diff you are on safer ground as it's a known fault, and lots of posts on here to back you up. Unfortunately (for you!) there doesn't seem to be a history of wheel bearing failures, and as we all know they do go from time to time, on any car. I've replaced plenty over the years. Ex AA Series III LWB Safari - Gone

Warranties like this cover total failure, not wear and tear. As far as they are concerned, it has not failed, it's just making a bit of noise. I've been there and done that, they just keep on wriggling. Good luck.

Many after market "warranties" are Quote, mechanical breakdown insurance policies. Hence your wheel bearing by their definition is NOT broken.

I was service manager with Ford Franchise for 25 years and had this problem with customers who purchased used cars from independent garages with these types of cover. All FL2's (3) Gone
2011 Mercedes C180 CGI Gone
FL2 GS Auto SD with heated leather, factory tints, alloy spare and a few other bits.
