I agree for the normal factory fitted tyres but we are talking General Grabber AT's here and their people reccomend an increase of 4 psi front and back so I will go with that, but I wondered if anybody ever bothered.

There used to be a law that vehicles with wheels less than 10" diameter were restricted to 50 mph. That was why the original Mini had 10" wheels instead of the planned 8". Or so I remember. But as I can't remember what I had for breakfast this morning I wouldn't put too much faith in my memory.

I watched a programme a while back on the design of the Mini, it was reported that Sir Alec Issigonis held his hands out depicting a circle with his thumb an fore finger of each hand and said it should have wheels this big, they measured the circle at ten inches, strange how stories develop. p****d off with a Digital Keyboard Warrior

towing speed with camper trailer

I have an off road camper set up for long distance and remote trips not sure of the weight but within in the FL2 towing limit . In the northern territory not long ago we had an open speed limit on the Stuart highway with road trains and semi trailers restricted to 100 kph .Passed a quad road train (prime mover with 4 trailers) and needed to get a bit of a wriggle on as there was aproaching vechicles a kilometre or so ahead .Trip log indicated speed past road train at 158 kph ,both camper and vechicle were very stable and reached that speed with little effort .Oncoming vechicles were still quite a distance away, maybe I did not need that big of a wriggle .

Hi there, it was stated earlier that a breakaway cable/safety chain was not needed on a trailer without brakes. This is so so WRONG . All trailers must have some form of secondary braking system. On an unbraked trailer there must be a safety chain or cable ideally fixed tg the tow bar not the tow ball. On a braked trailer there must be a brake away cable that pulls the trailer hand brake on if there is a failure either of the trailer hitch or tow ball. Failure to abide by these rules is a fine plus 3 points on your licence. The crime being, failing to maintain the secondary braking system on the trailer. Hope that is of some help.

Not strictly true , there are no secondary cable / chains fitted to articulated trailers(still a trailer being towed via ! 5th wheel of towing vehicle).
granted secondary brake lines and emergency red line ..but it would need to be one heck of a chain to keep the trailer attached to the tractor unit ..... Whistle Whistle Whistle Wales
Were the mud is thicker, and the ruts are deeper.
(And we have the water to wash it off, and more on the way..! )

If we're talking about what you are towing with an normal vehicle in the UK then the secondary braking system is mandatory, and it must not be attached to the tow-ball on the towing vehicle.

Fifth wheel and artics are a whole other game. 2011 MY SD4 HSE + planning some interesting stuff

mudslinger you are right about artics not having the safety chain but they do have a secondary braking system, i.e the red air line. If the trailer were to become detached air would be lost from the system on the trailer and tractor unit causing the "secondary brakes " to come on. On tractor units there is also a dog clip to keep the handle on a 5th wheel coupling to stop the handle from disengaging and that is also an offence for it not to be used. With regards breakaway cable, I always carry a spare one in the car because yes, I have disconnected a trailer and forgot to take the break away off. Not difficult to fit another one and only 7/ 8 pounds ago.
