new clutch cost?

Hi all
i was wondering if anyone as had to replace the clutch on a freelander 2 and what it cost, mine started slipping yesterday after towing a trailer which weighed no more than 750kg!!!! ,this happened a while ago after towing a horse trailer for a friend but the slipping stopped after a two days or so,whats more i didn't even have to reverse it once due to the size of the yards where we worked.
Wife thinks this is going to be expensive and we are going to france in 4 weeks so we are understandably worried, your views would be appreciated and thanks in advance Big Cry

Do a search. Lots on this forum. May be a warranty issue.

A clutch kit is around £160 from various places online! Mine is on the way out too, may do it myself depending on the cost of a local garage I use!

Again, do a search on here. Most of the problems are not the clutch plate - it's either the flywheel or the self-adjust getting clogged up with dust. Depending on how old, it could well be a warranty issue.

If its not under warranty or you cant get it done under warranty then dont take it to landrover. It WILL SET YOU BACK THE BEST PART OF A £1000 POUNDS. Mine started to slip but was still in warranty so got landrover to replace it free of charge.
Have a look at some of my past posts and see if your getting the same symtoms best of luck mate. ps the clutch kit compleate is around £400. If you have the clutch changed then it always best to change the pressure plate and release bearing and maybe the flywheel too if theres too much play in it. The freelander uses a duel mass flywheel which can and does go wrong but can be checked with the gear box housing, pressure plate and clucth plate removed.
Not to put a downer on things but its NO five minute job. Thumbs Up

The flywheel is £200, but the clutch is no more than £160. Unless your buying direct from land rover then you will need a mortgage. I know it's no 5 min job, I expect around 5-6 hours! Still fairly easy tho, if you know what you are doing!

Yer thats where the morgage is needed as landrover charge over £100 an hour. Bloody day light robbery.
If anyone does decide to do it them selves, could they take some pics and post on here, it would be very interesting to see what the flywheel, pressure plate etc and the condition their in Thumbs Up

Yer looked at that the other day £40 is just the starting bid, expect it to go a lot higher than that. Didnt see a release bearing there though. Wonder if the duel mass fly wheel will turn up on there soon. Probably selling the other items seperatly as this will net a higher price I think Whistle

Slip on my FL2 was caused by play in the DMF. Got both flywheel and clutch replaced under warranty without quibble after 27k miles. Problem is, while it's apart you might as well replace all the parts.
It's not good is it? New Defender with DMF is also having similar problems. Another member of the failed FL2 clutch/DMF club, twice.

Thats my thought too pegleg, as if these other parts where to fail, and itd sods law that they will then you have another strip down bill and you would be Big Cry Big Cry Big Cry al the way to the bank. many moons ago I put a new clutch in my cortina that I had and couldnt aford at the time to replace the other parts, one month later the pressure plate failed and I had to strip it all down again, not a happy bunny but theres a lot more work to do on the FL2 Shocked

I had mine replaced last week as the 1800-2200rpm slip came back. LR were very helpful but would not pay for it as the warranty expired in December 2009.

Mine was done by Marshall Land Rover in Leicestershire and in total I paid £834 including VAT. Not something I really wanted to pay, but since being done the car drives soooo much better.

Before it went to the LR dealer who I always use for servicing, who I trust 100% to do the job right, I had two quotes from independants. One in Leicester that does just clutches quoted £940 and another independant quote £820.

For an LR dealer, I think £834 is quite reasonable considering a Ford dealer charged my cousin £788 for a new clutch last month. Freelander 2 HSE Lux 2013MY - Barolo Black with Ivory Leather. Alpine DVD - Privacy -Evoque 20" Dynamic Wheels and more to come.........

OK, looking at the invoice, it breaks down as follows :-

Clutch Kit £139.98 + VAT = £167.97
Cylinder £53.01 + VAT = £63.62
Kudos Brake Dust Arrestor £5.04 + VAT = £6.05
Power Steering Fluid £12.75 + VAT = £15.30

Labour £485.2 + VAT = £582.24

Total £835.18

So based on 7 hours work, labour came in at £69 per hour + VAT which I thought was quite reasonable for an LR dealership. Freelander 2 HSE Lux 2013MY - Barolo Black with Ivory Leather. Alpine DVD - Privacy -Evoque 20" Dynamic Wheels and more to come.........
